Remember the Milk
With Remember the Milk, I’m able to be on top of every single upcoming task wherever I go. RTM has gadgets (as seen above), applications for all mobile platforms, an API, and much more. I’m a paid member and it’s well worth it. You can also specify whether these tasks repeat, such as weekly. Once you complete the weekly task, it’s assigned for next week. I have billing reminders on the 1st of the month to repeat every month. I could set up business calls to repeat every fourth Wednesday of the month, ending on May 18th. I also have weekly reminders like the one to the right.
I get email reminders for every incoming task 30 minutes before it’s due and then the day it’s due. I also get an email every day at 12:00AM with the upcoming tasks for the day. With the popups from Gmail Notifier, if I’m in the middle of something, I get a reminder of my upcoming task. (RTM is free, but extra functionality such as mobile access costs $25/year.)
In this new age of web apps, the web-based to-do list manager has pretty much become a punch-line among developers. That said, today I’d like to talk about one I feel stands apart: Remember the Milk.
It was a little less than a year ago when I started looking for ways to use my computer to organize my life. It began with using a spreadsheet for the monthly budget and soon, I wanted something for handling the to-do list.
I researched the many, many options available and decided to give Remember the Milk a shot (probably because it seemed so quirky compared to the stiffness I felt looking at the others.)
Evaluation:
Remember the Milk is an online application for managing task lists rather than manage to-do lists on sticky notes and scattered scraps of paper. Users can keep track of their lives by organizing tasks in color-coded, prioritized categories on-line. Remember the Milk may be synched with everything from the iPhone, to the Android, to Gmail. Users may receive reminders via email, instant messaging, or text message. Third party services also provide many more options for customizing tasks to fit users' needs.
Remember the Milk is possibly the most user friendly of the reviewed software. Maybe it is the cartoon cow, but it looks less complicated and better organized than many of its competitors. It is easy to navigate and accessible.
